Resin Care & Safety

Resin Care & Safety

Resin is a beautiful and versatile material, but it requires proper care and handling to maintain its appearance and ensure your safety. Whether you're working with liquid resin or finished pieces, understanding how to protect your creations and yourself is essential.

Protecting Resin from Damage

One of the biggest challenges resin enthusiasts face is yellowing over time. Resin naturally degrades when exposed to direct sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light. This process, called photooxidation, causes the once-clear or colored resin to develop a yellow or amber tint that can diminish the beauty of your piece.

To prevent yellowing, store and display your finished resin pieces away from direct sunlight. Keep them in interior spaces with minimal UV exposure, or display them behind glass or UV-protective acrylic. If your pieces are meant to be outdoors or near windows, consider applying a UV-protective topcoat designed for resin to slow the yellowing process. Do not wear resin jewelry under UV Lamps when getting nails done or tanning.

Avoid contact with sharp objects that may scratch the resin surface.

Remove resin jewelry before engaging in activities like working out, housework, washing dishes, or gardening.

Be cautious with personal care items like hand lotion, hair spray, shampoo, soap, perfume, nail polish remover, and hand sanitizer, as they may dull the resin surface. Remove jewelry before applying these items.

Do not expose resin jewelry to harsh pool/hot tub chemicals or salt water.

Heat is another enemy of resin. High temperatures can cause resin to become brittle, crack, or even warp. Avoid placing resin items near heat sources like radiators, ovens, or in vehicles parked in the sun. The ideal storage temperature is cool and stable—between 60–75°F (15–24°C) is optimal for most resins.

Safety When Working with Liquid Resin

Liquid resin requires careful handling before it cures. Many resin systems contain harmful chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. Always work in a well-ventilated space, preferably near an open window or in a dedicated workshop with air circulation. A respirator or dust mask rated for organic vapors is highly recommended, especially during mixing and pouring.

Wear nitrile or latex gloves to protect your skin from direct contact with uncured resin. If resin touches your skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water immediately. Avoid touching your face or eyes while handling resin, and keep the workspace away from children and pets who might accidentally ingest or inhale fumes.

Use dedicated mixing tools and containers for resin only—never use dishes, utensils, or containers intended for food. Uncured resin can be sticky and difficult to remove, so line your work surface with disposable paper or plastic sheeting for easy cleanup.

Safety with Cured Resin

Once fully cured, resin is generally safe to handle and display. Cured resin pieces are non-toxic and won't off-gas, making them safe for homes with children and pets. However, be mindful that sharp edges on some resin pieces can cause cuts, and large resin items can be heavy, so handle them carefully to avoid dropping or breaking them.

When sanding or cutting cured resin, always wear a dust mask or respirator, as inhaling resin dust can irritate your respiratory system. Use proper tools and techniques, and dispose of resin dust safely rather than allowing it to spread into your living space.

Long-Term Care

To keep your resin pieces looking their best for years to come, dust them gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could scratch or damage the surface. If your pieces need cleaning, use mild soap and lukewarm water, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

By taking time to understand how to care for resin and respecting its properties during creation, you'll ensure your beautiful projects remain stunning and your workspace stays safe.
